The Ex

Every other man in these scenes is new. This one is a return, and returns carry history you cannot compete with because you were not there for it.

He texts. Nothing dramatic, just something about being in town. She tells you about it immediately, which is both reassuring and the beginning of the problem, because she is already deciding what to wear while she tells you.

Then the dress. You have seen it before, but not recently, and not for you.

She did not buy that dress for you, and she is not wearing it for you tonight. You are the one driving.

The ex is the only man in this category with a documented past tense. He knows what she was like at twenty-four. He was there for the version of her that existed before your version. There are stories he is in and you are not, and no amount of present-tense marriage closes that gap. It is simply a part of her life you arrived too late for.

This scene runs on a question with no good answer: what if that was better? Not more loving, not more serious. Just hotter, younger, less careful. You will never get a straight answer and you will never stop asking.

Then the lift to the bar, which you offered. The kerb again. Handing over the purse again. Driving home to an empty flat and leaving the hall light on like a reasonable man.

What people report as the sharpest part is not the night itself. It is the next morning, when she is quiet in a way that could mean anything, and you decide not to ask.
