The Stranger
She met him an hour ago at the hotel bar. You're already in bed at home. She'll be home in the morning.
Every other scene gives you a face. This one gives you almost nothing, and the nothing is the point.
She is away for work. The hotel has a bar on the ground floor, the kind with low lighting and a bored pianist and eleven people in it on a Tuesday. An hour ago she was texting you about her day. Now she is not texting you about anything.
You are at home, in bed, with the lamp off and the phone face-up on the duvet beside you.
You do not know his name. You do not know what he looks like. You will never find out. Your imagination will fill in all of it, repeatedly, until morning.
This is the purest version of the fantasy, because there is no evidence to limit it. Jealousy does its best work with incomplete information, and the stranger scene is nothing but incomplete information. No photos, no introduction, no camera in your hands. Just a timestamp on a message that stopped, and six hours of imagining.
The small details carry the weight. Her phone going quiet rather than going off. The read receipt that arrives and then nothing after it. The fact that she has her own key card and nobody at that hotel knows she is married.
It is also the scene with the most distance in it: physically, informationally, completely. You cannot drive there. You cannot wait in a car outside. You cannot document anything. All you can do is lie still in your own bed and know that something is happening somewhere, to someone you love, without you.
Then the morning. She comes home, puts her bag down, and is exactly as warm with you as she always is. That is the part most people do not expect to be the hottest part.
In the app: the hotel bar, the man with no face, you at home. She uploads and approves; the set comes back with the distance intact.
She read your last text at the bar. She answered it in the morning.
Everyone depicted in a generated scene has to be an adult who gave consent for their likeness to be used. That is section 3 of our terms. Anyone can have their likeness removed here.
